The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 is an Act of the Parliament of India enacted to provide for the prevention and control of water pollution and the maintaining or restoring of wholesomeness of water. The Act was amended in 1988 and received the assent of the President of India on 27th April 1988. The Act provides for the establishment of a Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to advise the Central and State Governments on any matters concerning the prevention and control of water pollution. The Act defines water pollution as the presence in water of any sewage or trade effluent or of any other pollutants in such concentration and of such a nature as to be or likely to be injurious to public health or any animal or plant life or the quality of water for any reasonable use. The Act provides for the establishment of State Pollution Control Boards in each State or Union Territory and lays down the powers and functions of the State Boards.
